Cities around the world are growing warmer at a rate that far exceeds the surrounding rural areas. Consequently, urban residents are increasingly exposed to heat-related health risks that were previously uncommon in temperate regions. This phenomenon, known as the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, arises primarily because dense concentrations of buildings, roads, and pavements absorb and retain solar heat far more efficiently than natural vegetation does.

Although the UHI effect has been recognised by scientists since the early nineteenth century, it is only in recent decades that city planners have begun to take it seriously as a public health issue. Furthermore, rising global temperatures caused by climate change are amplifying the effect, making urban heat a compounding crisis rather than a standalone problem. Admittedly, some researchers argue that the UHI effect is less severe in coastal cities owing to the moderating influence of sea breezes; however, inland cities such as Phoenix, Delhi, and Ankara continue to record dangerously high nocturnal temperatures throughout the summer months.

Several factors contribute to the intensity of the UHI effect. Firstly, the material composition of urban surfaces plays a critical role: dark asphalt and concrete have a low albedo, meaning they reflect very little sunlight and instead convert most of it into heat. In addition, the sheer density of buildings in city centres reduces wind flow, trapping warm air at street level. Subsequently, this trapped heat continues to radiate from building surfaces long after sunset, which is why urban nights remain considerably warmer than rural ones even when daytime temperatures are similar.

Despite the scale of the challenge, a growing number of cities are adopting innovative strategies to combat UHI. For instance, Singapore has mandated green rooftops on all new commercial buildings, while Melbourne has committed to planting thousands of trees along its major arterial roads. These interventions work because vegetation releases moisture through transpiration, thereby cooling the surrounding air. Provided that such measures are implemented at sufficient scale, urban temperatures could be reduced by as much as three degrees Celsius within a decade.

Nevertheless, progress remains uneven across the globe. Wealthier cities have the financial resources to invest in reflective pavements, urban forests, and cool roof technologies, whereas rapidly growing cities in the developing world — precisely those most exposed to climate risk — often lack the infrastructure budgets to do so. Unless international funding mechanisms are expanded to support these cities, the UHI effect will continue to widen the global inequality gap. Indeed, the urban heat crisis is ultimately as much a question of equity as it is of engineering.
