Why this matters. When we tell a story or describe a past event, we usually need two past tenses together. The past continuous sets the scene and shows an action that was in progress, such as “I was cooking”. The past simple shows the main event or the short action that interrupted it, such as “the phone rang”. This pair is perfect for Speaking Part 2, where you often describe a memorable event, and for Part 1 questions like “What were you doing yesterday at eight?”. You already know the past simple from the last lesson, so now you add was and were plus a verb with ing. You also studied subordinating conjunctions, and when and while are two of the most useful ones for stories. Subject-verb agreement matters again, because I, he, she and it take was, while you, we and they take were. Finally, the -ing spelling rules from earlier lessons are used here too. Learn the pattern below and your stories will sound more natural and more fluent.

Self-learning step: Open Google and search “past simple vs past continuous when while examples”. Read one page for five minutes, then come back and try the activities.

TenseFormUseExample
Past continuouswas / were + verb-ingA longer action in progress in the pastI was cooking dinner.
Past simpleverb 2: rang, saw, brokeA finished action, or a short action that interruptsThe phone rang.
When + short action
I was cooking when the phone rang.
While + long action
While I was cooking, the phone rang.
Two actions at the same time
While she was studying, her sister was playing.
One finished action after another
When I arrived, she made tea. (past simple, past simple)
SubjectPositiveNegativeQuestion
I / he / she / itShe was cookingShe was not cookingWas she cooking?
you / we / theyThey were playingThey were not playingWere they playing?
Comma rule: Use a comma when the when or while part comes first: While I was walking, I saw an accident. IELTS traps: do not write “We was waiting”, and do not use the past continuous for the short action, so “the phone was ringing” is wrong when you mean one sudden ring.
