What are sequencing words? They show the order of steps, events or ideas: what comes first, next and last. They help your reader follow you in Speaking, Writing Task 1 (process) and Writing Task 2. Put a comma after them at the start of a sentence.

💡 IELTS tip: Use a variety of sequencing words. Do not repeat then again and again. Also remember: First starts a list, but At first means “in the beginning” (and things changed later). In a Task 1 process, 4 to 5 sequencing words are enough.
