How to Master Punctuation and Capitalization for IELTS

Objective:

To use punctuation and capitalization correctly to enhance clarity, accuracy, and coherence in IELTS Writing and Speaking.

🔹 1. Common Punctuation Marks & Their Functions

Mark	Name	Function / Example
.	Full stop	Ends a sentence. e.g., The trend increased sharply.
,	Comma	Separates ideas or items. e.g., The chart shows men, women, and children.
;	Semicolon	Links two related independent clauses. e.g., The prices increased; demand decreased.
:	Colon	Introduces lists or explanations. e.g., Three factors influence pollution: traffic, industry, and population.
?	Question mark	Used in direct questions. e.g., What can be done to solve this issue?
!	Exclamation mark	Expresses emotion or emphasis. e.g., What a remarkable change!
–	Hyphen	Joins compound words. e.g., A well-known fact.
—	Dash	Adds emphasis or extra information. e.g., The results — though surprising — were accurate.
‘	Apostrophe	Shows possession or contraction. e.g., Students’ performance / it’s = it is.
” “	Quotation marks	Enclose direct speech or cited text. e.g., The report states, “Global warming is rising.”

Use capital letters for:

The first word of a sentence.
e.g., The graph illustrates population growth.
Proper nouns (names of people, countries, organizations).
e.g., Pakistan, The United Nations, IELTS.
Days, months, holidays.
e.g., Monday, July, Eid.
Titles and headings.
e.g., Global Warming and Climate Change.
The pronoun “I”.
e.g., I think education plays a vital role.
