Why this matters. The past perfect and the past perfect continuous both take us back to a time before another moment in the past, so they are useful for storytelling. The difference is about focus, just like the present perfect pair you studied earlier. The past perfect focuses on the result, the number or the completion, as in “By noon, he had written five emails”. The past perfect continuous focuses on the activity and how long it continued, as in “She had been waiting for an hour when I arrived”. You already know had plus a past participle from the last lesson, and now you add had been plus a verb with ing. The words for and since also return, and they are the key signal words for the continuous form. Subject-verb agreement is easy here, because had and had been stay the same for every subject. In Speaking Part 2, these two tenses help you explain what had happened or had been happening before an important moment. Learn the question trick below, and your stories will sound more advanced and more accurate.

Self-learning step: Open Google and search “past perfect vs past perfect continuous examples”. Read one page for five minutes, then come back and try the activities.

TenseFormFocusExample
Past perfecthad + verb 3Result, completion, numberHe had written five emails.
Past perfect continuoushad been + verb-ingActivity, duration, visible causeShe had been waiting for an hour.
Question trick
How many? Use the past perfect: How many pages had she read?
How long? Use the continuous: How long had she been reading?
Signal words for the continuous
for, since, all day, all night, how long
Visible cause
Use the continuous to explain a past situation: The ground was wet because it had been raining.
-ing spelling
make, making. run, running. study, studying. write, writing.
State verbs have no continuous form: know, like, love, want, need, believe, understand, be. Say “I had known her for years”, never “I had been knowing her”. IELTS traps: do not forget been, so “She had waiting” is wrong, and do not forget ing, so “She had been wait” is wrong.
