What are antonyms? Antonyms are words with opposite meanings. But not all opposites work in the same way. There are three main types. Use the quick test for each one:
Gradable
“Not X” does NOT mean Y.
There is a middle.
Complementary
“Not X” = Y.
No middle.
Relational
Two sides of one action or relationship.
Gradable antonymsDegrees exist: very, more, less, slightly
Complementary antonymsOnly two choices. You cannot say “very” or “more”.
Relational antonymsOne word needs the other (also called converse antonyms)
πŸ’‘ IELTS tip: Gradable antonyms can be modified (much cheaper, slightly warmer, far more difficult), which is useful for comparing in Writing and Speaking. Complementary antonyms cannot: ❌ very dead, slightly true. There is also a fourth type, reversive antonyms (rise–fall, increase–decrease, enter–exit), which shows opposite directions and is very useful in Writing Task 1.
